Kelly Sparks: VMG Studios was born out of a moment of unexpected blessing during one of the darkest times in my life. After discovering a hidden stash of money, I realized it was more than just a financial windfall—it was a sign that I could rebuild my life and create something meaningful. I wanted to build a company that not only told stories but also helped others find their voice.
Kelly Sparks: When we started, VMG Studios was a small operation focused on basic video production. Today, we’ve evolved into a full-service creative agency that not only offers animation and virtual production but has expanded into creative strategy, branding, design, and e-learning. Our growth has been driven by a commitment to innovation and a constant drive to stay ahead of industry trends. Always adapting to meet the changing needs of our clients, ensuring that we provide them with the best solutions across a wide range of creative services.

Kelly Sparks: One of our proudest moments was winning our first Emmy Award, which was a validation of our team’s hard work and creativity. Another milestone was securing our first major enterprise client, Coca-Cola, which opened doors to many more enterprise clients like Microsoft and Amazon.
And we continue to pursue new milestones all the time. In more recent years, we completed our first LED Volume on-set Virtual Production shoot. This milestone marked a significant leap forward for VMG Studios as we embraced the latest advancements in virtual production technology. The LED Volume setup allowed us to create immersive, dynamic environments in real-time, opening up new creative possibilities for our clients. It showcased our commitment to staying at the forefront of the industry and set the stage for future innovation in video production.
As we’ve looked to expand our offerings, I’m also incredibly proud of winning the 53 Bank RFP. This was a pivotal moment for VMG Studios, as it led to a multi-million-dollar e-learning project that showcased our ability to deliver large-scale, impactful content. The project’s success was underscored by six prestigious awards, recognizing its innovative design and effectiveness. This achievement highlighted our capability to excel in the e-learning space, demonstrating not just creative excellence but also the tangible results we can deliver for enterprise clients.
Kelly Sparks: As a female entrepreneur in the creative industry, I’ve had to fight twice as hard to be taken seriously, especially coming from a background of personal struggle. There were moments when I doubted myself, but those experiences only fueled my determination to succeed. Navigating the business world as a woman-owned company has presented unique challenges, particularly when it comes to breaking into traditional networks without established connections. Yet, I believe that adversity can be a powerful motivator. the journey has been filled with unique challenges that have shaped who I am and the business I’ve built.
2015 Downturn: A Test of Leadership and Resilience
It was the support of people like my husband, Mark, and the lessons from the struggles that pushed me forward. I had to learn to trust in myself, persevere through every setback, and rely on my creativity and determination to overcome the odds.
One of the pivotal moments was when VMG faced a downturn in 2015, and I had to make the difficult decision to lay off a third of our team. It was heartbreaking but necessary to ensure the survival and growth of the company. That experience taught me that no matter how challenging things get, success comes from adaptability, perseverance, and learning from your mistakes.
Today, we are stronger and more resilient because of those hard times. In the end, each challenge reinforced my belief that hard work, passion, and the courage to embrace change are essential for success, and that’s the message I carry with me in everything I do.
Balancing Personal Life as a Mom with Professional Growth
One of the most difficult challenges I faced as a female entrepreneur was finding a balance between my personal life and the growth of VMG Studios. After my divorce, I not only had to rebuild my life but also navigate the emotional toll of losing custody of my children. That experience was heartbreaking and left me questioning how I could continue to push forward while managing the intense grief of being apart from them.
Building a business from the ground up while dealing with such a personal loss was emotionally draining. There were many days when I wanted to give up, but I knew that my children were watching, and I wanted to set an example of resilience. Despite the emotional challenges, I poured my energy into growing VMG Studios, driven by the desire to create a successful, stable future for myself and my family. It took immense strength to show up every day, lead a business, and build something meaningful, all while dealing with the personal struggles I was facing at home.
Through it all, I learned that entrepreneurship isn’t just about business success—it’s about perseverance and growth in the face of adversity. Juggling both my personal hardships and professional responsibilities shaped me into a stronger leader and a more empathetic business owner.
The 2010 Burglary: A Test of Resilience
One of the most significant and unexpected challenges I faced as a female entrepreneur was the burglary that hit VMG Studios in 2010. At the time, we were still a growing business, and every resource was critical to our survival and success. One night, thieves broke into our space, stealing all our valuable equipment and footage that represented months of hard work, irreplaceable creative assets, and a substantial financial investment.
It was a devastating blow. As a small business owner, I didn’t have the luxury of simply replacing what was taken. Losing that equipment not only impacted our day-to-day operations, but it also delayed projects and created a ripple effect of issues with clients who were relying on us to deliver. The burglary felt like a violation—not just of our physical space, but of the trust and security I had worked so hard to establish.
In the immediate aftermath, it would have been easy to let the setback overwhelm me. However, this experience taught me that challenges like these are part of the entrepreneurial journey. I quickly realized that resilience was key to overcoming the obstacles ahead. We tightened our security, doubled down on our determination, and refocused our energy on moving forward. I had to find creative solutions, make difficult financial decisions, and inspire my team to keep pushing through, even when things felt uncertain.
That moment marked a turning point for VMG Studios. Instead of letting the incident define us, we used it as an opportunity to rebuild stronger and smarter. It reinforced my belief that, as entrepreneurs, we must be prepared for the unexpected, and more importantly, we must be able to bounce back from adversity. The burglary tested our resilience as a team, but it also strengthened our resolve and prepared us for the many challenges we would face in the future.

Kelly Sparks: At VMG Studios, our competitive edge comes from a combination of innovation, adaptability, and a relentless focus on delivering exceptional quality. We’ve always embraced change and stayed ahead of industry trends by investing in cutting-edge technology, expanding our creative capabilities, and fostering a team culture built on collaboration and continuous learning. Whether it’s virtual production, interactive media, or the latest in animation, we ensure that we’re not only meeting the current needs of our clients but anticipating what they’ll need next.
Another key factor is our deep understanding of storytelling. Every project we undertake, regardless of the medium, is driven by a clear, compelling narrative that connects with audiences on a meaningful level. We partner closely with our clients to understand their vision and translate it into content that truly resonates, helping their brands stand out in a crowded marketplace.
Our commitment to authenticity and accountability also sets us apart. We’ve built long-term relationships with enterprise clients like Microsoft, Amazon, and Starbucks because they trust us to deliver consistently and exceed expectations. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of creativity and professionalism, which has earned us a reputation as a trusted partner in the industry.
Lastly, VMG Studios maintains its competitive edge by embracing change and remaining flexible. We’re not afraid to pivot when needed, and we view challenges as opportunities to innovate and grow. Kelly Sparks: It’s incredibly emotional. This anniversary is a celebration of resilience, both mine and the company’s. It’s a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and to express gratitude for everyone who has been part of this journey. I’m especially grateful for my husband, Mark Sparks, whose been my rock since the very beginning and played an integral part in my and this company’s success. I’m excited about the future and what the next 20 years will bring.

Kelly Sparks: We see our clients as partners. Our goal is to truly understand their needs and challenges so we can deliver solutions that exceed their expectations. Many of our clients have been with us for years, and I believe that’s because we build trust and deliver results.
Kelly Sparks: Innovation is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s exploring new technologies or finding creative ways to tell a story, we’re always looking for the next big idea. Innovation keeps us relevant and allows us to continue providing value to our clients.

Kelly Sparks: My biggest piece of advice is to embrace every opportunity—big or small—and be willing to start from the ground up. When I first began, I was creating wedding and birth videos, which some might consider the lower rung of creative work. But those early projects taught me invaluable lessons about storytelling, client relationships, and perseverance. So, don’t underestimate the value of small gigs—they can be the stepping stones to bigger opportunities.
Stay adaptable. The creative industry is constantly evolving with new technology, platforms, and trends. If you’re not willing to adapt and learn, you’ll quickly fall behind. Keep pushing yourself to learn new skills, experiment with different creative outlets, and be open to change.
Network and build relationships. Success in this industry is often as much about who you know as what you know. It’s essential to put yourself out there, attend industry events, join communities, and make an effort to form genuine relationships. Many of my biggest opportunities came from referrals or collaborations that started with a simple conversation. I’ve found that when you focus on building authentic connections and providing value to others, those relationships often lead to unexpected, meaningful opportunities down the road.
Most importantly, don’t be afraid to fail. Mistakes and setbacks are inevitable, but they’re also where the most growth happens. Be resilient, learn from your failures, and use them as fuel to keep moving forward. The creative industry requires thick skin, but if you stay true to your vision and remain dedicated to your craft, you’ll find your place in it.
Kelly Sparks: As we celebrate 20 years of VMG Studios, we’re more energized than ever to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation. The future for VMG is all about expanding our capabilities and embracing new technologies that will allow us to offer even more dynamic solutions to our clients. Virtual production, event content, and interactive storytelling are areas where we see tremendous growth opportunities.
Internally, we’re investing in the continued development of our team. We believe in nurturing talent and fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and lifelong learning. This approach will ensure that we remain at the cutting edge of the industry while continuing to deliver exceptional work for our clients.
Lastly, as a woman-owned business, we’re committed to furthering our impact in the areas of diversity and inclusion. We want to be a leading example of how creativity, innovation, and diverse perspectives can come together to drive real change in the world.
In short, the future for VMG Studios is about growth, innovation, and expanding the ways in which we tell stories that matter. We’re ready for the next chapter, and we’re excited to see where it takes us.
